Windows 10 has a new cumulative update, but sadly - as is a rather familiar story these days - it's reportedly causing trouble for some users.

KB5003637 represents Microsoft's monthly round of patching for June, and it provides a whole bunch of security fixes (plus "updates for storing and managing files"). It's provided to users on the May 2021 Update, October 2020 Update and May 2020 Update (which are the same core versions of Windows 10, but with minor differences).

The main problem here is that some folks are encountering issues with the taskbar, and the unfortunate thing is that you may recall that the preview of this upgrade, patch KB5003214, which was released in late May for testing, carried the same kind of gremlins - so they apparently haven't been fixed for full release.

As Windows Latest, which spotted this, points out, some users are reporting various issues around the taskbar, for example: "KB5003214 [May preview update] was optional, but KB5003637 is automatically installed and causes the same issue (taskbar icons bug). These updates literally break the usability of my PC."

One post on Reddit complains: "The problem with the taskbar icons disappearing is back ... and I thought they would fix it."

The issues reported include the system tray icons (on the far right of the taskbar) being corrupted or even vanishing entirely, or the search box on the taskbar disappearing, and various other glitches (including problems with Action Center notifications). None of these bugs have been officially acknowledged in the known issues of the new cumulative update for June.

Quick (unofficial) fixes

Windows Latest theorizes that in some cases the problems may stem from using "Input Method Editors (IMEs) and/or multiple language packs". If that's the case, your best bet is simply to uninstall the update (or defer it for now).

Uninstalling the cumulative update gets rid of the problem, as you might expect, but there is another easy fix that allows you to keep the security patches contained in KB5003637 - and that's to turn off the freshly introduced News widget on the taskbar, which may be the root cause in some cases.

If that doesn't work, another potential quick fix to try is to head to Settings > System > Display, and ensure that under ‘Scale and layout', the option for changing the size of text, apps and other items is set to the ‘recommended' value. If it isn't, that could be another possible trigger for the taskbar bug.

As well as these taskbar issues, unfortunately KB5003637 is also playing up with printers. Specifically, Windows Latest points out that the update squashes a print spooler-related vulnerability, but that fix is actually causing some spooler issues.
