To get this extension up and running, you just have to extract the DLL file from the downloaded pack and move it to the "plugins" folder of Notepad++. It doesn't matter if you have the portable or installer edition, since the plugin works for both.

If you already had opened Notepad++ before following these steps, make sure to restart it or you won't be able to access the Speech from the "Plugins" menu.

You can set the tool to speak the entire document or only the selected text. It uses a robotic male voice called Microsoft David, which is frequently used in text-to-voice applications.

Beside starting and stopping Microsot David, you can pause and resume the speech anytime. Unfortunately, there are no options implemented for increasing or decreasing the speech rate, nor for adjusting the volume level separately from the system volume.

It would've also been easier if the developer had integrated an option for highlighting words as they are being read by the voice, in order to seamlessly follow it.

Another practical feature would've been to embed a pane with the Speech controls in the main window of Notepad++ to be able to easily make adjustments to the document and manage plugin settings.

All things considered, Speech proves to be an elementary text-to-speech tool for Notepad++ users. Too bad that it doesn't come packed with richer options and configuration settings that would've made it more interesting.
